OK, maybe that’s over simplifying things just a tad, but seriously, that’s what it all boils down to in the end. And it doesn’t’ just go for business, but in all areas in life where you hope to accomplish something. For example, I have a friend who lost a significant amount of weight. When I asked how, he simply said, “I keep my caloric intake to 1800 a day and exercise”. Success, it’s just that simple. Have a plan, work hard, and stick to it. Hmmm…. seems I’ve heard that somewhere before.
But since the focus here is on how to become successful in business, and not weight loss, let’s apply it there.
Step 1: Have a Plan!
Whatever business you hope to start, you have to have a plan. What is the grand vision for this business? Where do you want to see it go, and how are you going to get there?
I suggest you take the time to sit down and write out a formal business plan. It will help you answer some of the most important questions, such as:
- What is it going to cost to get started?
- What are the ongoing costs?
- Can I support myself until it turns a profit?
- What is my marketing strategy?
- When can I expect to start making a profit?
- When should I start taking some profit?
These are just some of the questions you will want to answer up front to become successful. If you find these difficult to answer, then maybe you have some work to do before you are ready to take the leap. Figure out the answers to these questions, then see where you stand. Will it take extra capital? What adjustments will you need to make to your schedule to make the time needed to make it work?
Step 2: Work Hard!
This one may seem obvious, but stick with me. The old adage of work smarter not harder is BS. You have to work BOTH SMART and HARD if you hope to become successful. I’m not saying you necessarily have to work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, but you might. That’s going to depend on you.
You need to decide, based on the answers to the questions in the previous section, just how much time you are going to need to devote, per day, week or month, to make this business successful. Many companies fail simply because the new owner did not realize how taxing it would be, and they gave up. Decide how much time you are willing to spend up front to become successful, and do the math. If you can reach your goals, with the effort you have allocated, then go for it. If not, back to the drawing board.
Step 3: Stick To It!
We’ve all heard the analogies. Stopping short a foot from striking oil, or an inch from the finish line. I won’t bore you with such cliches. What I will say is, there are going to be rough times. Things are not always going to go according to plan. It’s how you respond in these times that will make or break your business and determine whether or not you become successful.
Those tough times are when you better have a really good “WHY”. If your reason for building your business is bigger than the obstacle, you will push through. If not, well, that’s where a lot of people fold and go home and never become successful.

I can’t guarantee you will become successful if you follow these guidelines. There is so much more to the process, and most of it is completely unique depending upon your situation. Nobody ever said it would be easy. In fact, quite the opposite. Anyone who is being honest will tell you, it’s going to be a HARD road! When you hear people trying to offer a “Easy Button” method, RUN! There is no such thing.
