Creating descriptive categories and file names for the pages on your website using permalinks can not only help you keep your site better organized, but it could also lead to increased crawling of your pages by the search engines. Also, it can create easier, “friendlier” URLs for those that want to link to your content.
What Are Permalinks And Why Are They Important?
As the video states, not only will having permalinks set to “Post name” help the search engines be able to make sense of your site easier, but it will also help the user.
Think about it. If someone finds your site in a Google search, or in a social media post, and your url has the phrase they are searching for within it. They will be much more likely to click. If it’s just a random post number, that doesn’t’ give the user anything to go on.
If the user is not sure whether or not the link will lead to an answer for them, they are far less likely to click it. Your meta description helps a lot here too, but that’s a discussion for another video.
Basically, anything you can do to show the user, and the search engines, that your page contains what they are looking for, the better off you will be. That is, of course, assuming the page actually does have that information. Long gone are the days of stuffing tons of random keywords and getting ranked only to draw in traffic from random sources.
And seriously, it’s better to have targeted traffic finding your site anyway, rather than having people finding it for keywords that are note directly related to what you have to offer.
The internet is filled with sites designed to draw people in with some funny picture or video, that offer no real value, and only exist to try and then sell something. There is no targeting going on there. They fire hose the internet in hopes that they can get so much traffic that eventually someone will click on something that makes them a few cents.
Contrast that with targeting a specific need a person has, so that when they search for a solution to it, they find you. Doesn’t that sound like a much better option? Yeah, I thought so too.
